Israeli play to be performed in British National Theater

For first time in history, Hebrew-language drama dealing with British mandate era to be presented in London in May 2010

Israel's national theater Habima makes an unprecedented achievement: In May 2010, an Israeli Hebrew-language play will be performed at the British National Theater for the first time in history.

The decision to stage the play in London was made Tuesday at the end of a visit to Israel by the British theater's artistic director, Nicholas Hytner, and acclaimed playwright David Hare.

In meetings with Habima Theater’s artistic director, Ilan Ronen, it was agreed to stage two plays in London and in Tel Aviv in 2010, which would deal with the British Mandate era and its implications on the complex political reality between Israel and the Palestinians.

The Israeli play will be written by playwright Hillel Mittelpunkt, and the British one will be written by Hare, who is considered the most prominent playwright in Britain these days due to his criticism against senior government officials in various countries.

Hare's plays which have been presented in Israel include "Fanshen," "Amy's View" and "Via Dolorosa," which he wrote after a visit to the Holy Land about 10 years ago.
