Terrorist to compensate victims' family

Kamil Hneish, responsible for murderous attack in Itamar, ordered to pay millions to Sabo family

Kamil Said Hassan Hneish, the terrorist who planned the 2002 attack in Itamar in which Rachel Sabo was murdered along with her three children, has been ordered by Jerusalem's District Court to compensate the family with NIS 60 million ($14 million.)

In June 2002, a terrorist armed with a rifle and hand grenades entered the Sabo family home in Itamar, south of Nablus. He opened fire, murdering Rachel and her three children – 15-year old Neriya, 12-year old Tzvika, and 5-year old Avishai.

Two other Sabo children were injured, one of them seriously. Yossi Twito (age 40,) who served as commander of Itamar's security squad, was also shot to death when he arrived at the family's house in an attempt to help.

The Sabo family filed a law suit against the terrorist responsible for planning the attack, as well as against Mohammed Dahlan, Yasser Arafat's successors, and the Palestinian Authority.

Justice Rafi Carmel ruled that Hneish must compensate the family and awarded each of the 10 plaintiffs millions of shekels.

"Deeds such as this, which bring about such tragic results, justify punitive damages," he wrote in the verdict. "This is a serious and particularly outrageous deed that was undertaken intentionally."

In May of 2005, Hneish was handed nine life sentences by a Samaria military court. He was also found guity in connection with an attack in Netanya's market in 2002.
