Friday evening: 3.5 mag earthquake felt in northern Israel

Epicenter 12 miles east of Tyre in Lebanon. Earlier in the day 4.2 magnitude tremor hits north Israel; residents from Haifa to Nahariya and Kfar Blum report earth moved for several seconds; no injuries reported

A mild earthquake registering 3.5 on the Richter scale hit northern Israel Friday evening.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Center said the quake's epicenter was 19 kilometers (about 12 miles) east of the Lebanese city of Tyre. There were no reports of injury or damage in Israel.

Earlier Friday another earthquake was felt in northern Israel. Many Ynet readers – from Haifa to Kibbutz Kfar Blum – reported feeling the earth move for several seconds. There were no reports of injuries.

The Geophysical Institute of Israel (GII) confirmed that a series of 10 mild earthquakes hit southern Lebanon Friday afternoon. The strongest tremor, which was felt in northern Israel, erupted at 2:04 pm and measured 4.2 on the Richter scale.

A website monitoring earthquakes in Europe reported that the quake's epicenter was in the eastern Mediterranean Sea.

Liat of Kfar Blum told Ynet, "I felt something move under the bed, as if there was a monster under the ground moving it. It's simply amazing.

"I've experienced an earthquake before, but not like this. My sister who lives in Kiryat Shmona told me that everyone came out of the building because the quake was so strong."

Dudu of Kiryat Shmona reported of furniture moving and light bulbs being shattered. Chava from Nahariya said, "I was in bed and I felt it move. I live on the fourth floor, and suddenly everything started moving – the computer and the television. It's unpleasant, but nothing happened."

Moshe of Kiryat Shmona said, "I was sitting in my room when suddenly the cupboard moved, the computer moved, everything began trembling. The quake was relatively weak, but we felt it very well."

A moderate quake was felt across Israel about a year ago, measuring 5.3 on the Richter magnitude scale. Its epicenter was recorded in Lebanon. It was one of the most powerful quakes to hit Israel in the past few years.
