Smuggling tunnel collapses, killing Palestinian
Egyptian police say victim suffocated after tunnel beneath border with Gaza caves in; others smugglers survive
Egyptian police said a smuggling tunnel beneath the border with Gaza has collapsed, killing one Palestinian.
Police said the victim suffocated, while several other smugglers survived Sunday's accident.
Palestinians use such tunnels to bring food, clothing, fuel and even livestock into the impoverished Gaza Strip. Egypt and Israel have blockaded Gaza since the Islamic terror group Hamas seized control of it two years ago in a battle with its Palestinian rivals.
Israel has attacked the tunnels to try to stop Hamas from smuggling in weapons.
Egyptian police used heavy machinery to recover the body of the man killed Sunday.
The police official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press.
