Barak: Shalit's release holy duty

IDF officers, reserve troops meet with defense minister in fight to bring kidnapped soldier home

Defense Minister Ehud Barak met Sunday with IDF officers and reserve soldiers battling for the release of kidnapped soldier Gilad Shalit.

The activists have recently handed a letter to Barak asking him to take personal responsibility for Shalit's release from captivity, including a petition to this effect signed by hundreds of their colleagues.

"As a commander, former chief of staff, and defense minister I have determined that we have a holy duty to return Gilad Shalit, and we will undertake every proper and plausible move required to return him to his family," Barak told the activists.

"I feel the weight of this responsibility and not a day goes by that we don't concern ourselves with this issue. It warms my heart to see you, as people who don't know Gilad, come together in such social solidarity," he added.

Earlier this month the activists protested before Barak's residence in Tel Aviv and handed his wife a letter calling for Shalit's release.
