Palestinian reconciliation deal underway
Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit says Hamas, Fatah agree on treaty meant to end internal Palestinian strife
Egypt's foreign minister said Monday that rival Palestinian factions will meet in Cairo on October 25 to sign a reconciliation charter.
Ahmed Aboul Gheit, in a joint press conference with his Jordanian counterpart, said that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has agreed to the signing date.
He said the meeting would involve the heads of the various Palestinian factions "who will sign the charter."
Hamas drove Abbas' forces out of Gaza in 2007, leaving him in control of only the West Bank. Repeated reconciliation efforts have failed, complicating peace efforts with Israel.
Egypt has been leading mediation efforts.
Earlier in the day, Aboul Gheit met with Jordan's King Abdullah II and later with Abbas.
