PA against PFLP: 3 arrested in Nablus

Security source says detainees likely to be freed after committing to cease activities. PFLP member calls on PA to end 'persecution' of Palestinians

Palestinian security forces arrested three members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine on Thursday in Nablus on suspicion of planning attacks.

A security source told Ynet that the organization's leaders urged the Palestinian Authority to release them, but without success. However, the same source said he thought that they would be released if they agreed to desist from any activities that undermined security and stability in the West Bank city.

Meanwhile, in an interview with Palestinian news agency Maan, Member of the PA Legislative Council Khalida Jarar said that she demands that the PA release the three young men, all in their 20s, and called for an end to the "persecution and arrest" of Palestinians.

The head of the Popular Front, Ahmad Sadaat, is serving a sentence of 30 years behind bars in Israel for heading a terrorist organization. He was originally caught for his part in the assassination of former Minister of Tourism Rehavam Ze'evi nine years ago, but the prosecution later dropped this charge.

At the beginning of the month, Palestinian security forces announced that they had arrested six al-Qaeda activists in the West Bank. A senior officer in the PA, Brigadier General Ibrahim Ramadan, said they had been arrested in the Jenin area after home-made explosive devices had been discovered in their homes.

Ramadan added that the arrests had been handled by PA forces without assistance from Israel.
