An Israeli citizen has been arrested for allegedly trying to run over an IDF soldier Wednesday evening during an attempt to smuggle Palestinians into Israel.

The incident occurred at around 6 pm at the Maccabim checkpoint on Highway 443. The suspect, who arrived at the site in a grey Mazda, ignored a female soldier's order to stop and sped up instead.

Soldiers placed spike strips on the road in an attempt to block the driver's path, but he began driving in the opposite direction. One of the soldiers ran towards the car with his rifle cocked, but the driver still did not stop and nearly ran over the soldier.

The car came to a halt a few seconds later. Three Palestinians he was allegedly trying to smuggle into Israel were found in the trunk of car.

The Israeli driver and the Palestinians were taken in for questioning.
