Somali pirates try to hijack Zim ship again

Security guards fend off pirates surrounding Israeli vessel sailing in Red Sea; no injuries reported

Pirates, apparently from Somalia, attempted to hijack a Zim "Africa Star" ship on Saturday near the Republic of Djibouti, reported the Israeli shipping company, which is owned by the Ofer family.

Security guards aboard the ship returned fire and repelled the pirates, who surrounded the vessel as it was sailing in the Red Sea.

The Transportation Ministry was notified that the Zim ship was attacked as it was making its way from Mombasa, Kenya to the Ashdod Port.

The incident ended with no casualties among the Zim crew. A similar attempt to hijack a Zim vessel on Thursday also ended without injury.

On Tuesday Somali pirates hijacked a ship sailing in the Indian Ocean. The Malta-flagged MV Frigia, which sailed from the Ashdod Port en route to Thailand, was carrying fertilizer purchased from an Israeli company.
