An unquenchable thirst for a scarce resource lends itself to a perfect opportunity for “Thirsty for Change”, an eco-friendly fashion show that took place on Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya. This student-led initiative, directed by Talya Friedman from the IDC Sammy Ofer School of Communications and sponsored by Danya International, aimed to raise awareness and promote change about water conservation in Israel. By incorporating the powerful industry of fashion into our seemingly mundane activities, like water usage and conservation, the event highlighted the influence we have on our surroundings and the role we have in creating global change. “People spend countless hours worrying about what to wear and when it comes to water usage- something that really needs our attention, no one thinks twice about it,” explains Friedman, “Since fashion is something people care about, its a great platform for promoting change.” The featured fashion designer, POPLOVE Designs is already striving to act responsibly by creating sustainable fashion. All proceeds were donated to Israel Water Treaty, a local organization which works to protect residents’ rights to quality water and to provide educational programming on water issues. Eitan CKeter-Yaakov, CEO of the Israel Water Treaty stressed the need for the public's involvement. “We (the public) need to work with the local authorities to ensure that water remains as a public resource. (Our organization has already made the efforts to gain politicians support for a law guaranteeing all citizens the right to water even if they cannot afford it. This is just the beginning though. Public participation in the water sector is a personal responsibility that everyone needs to account for.” According to the organizers, “Thirsty for Change” reminds the public that water is both an essential and scarce resource in Israel. "This national challenge necessitates that we act together to prevent water scarcity, so that we can look at the glass half full, rather than half empty," the said in a statement.
