Officers, leftists hurt during West Bank rally

Border Guard officers, protestors lightly hurt in Umm Salamuna; Palestinians say former European Parliament vice president detained during Bilin rally

Two Border Guard officers were lightly injured on Friday when stones were thrown at them during a demonstration held in the Palestinian village of Umm Salamuna, located southwest of Bethlehem in the West Bank.

Two foreign protestors, both female, were also lightly wounded during the rally. They were evacuated to a hospital in Bethlehem.

Security forces arrested an Israeli left-wing activist.

According to Palestinian sources, Italian national Luisa Morgantini, the former vice president of the European Parliament, was detained during another rally held in the West Bank village of Bilin along with two other protestors.

The sources said Morgantini was released after she had identified herself.

Palestinians and leftists also protested near the village of Bitin in the Ramallah area. They hurled stones at security forces and rolled burning tires towards the West Bank security barrier. Border Guard officers responded with tear gas and stun grenades.
