Indonesian police said on Tuesday that militant Islamist cleric Abu Bakar Bashir, who was detained this week, will be charged under anti-terrorism laws that carry the death penalty.
The detention of Bashir, who is considered by many foreign governments as a driving force for radical Islamic movements in Indonesia, follows a series of police raids and the capture or killing of several members of a relatively new militant network which police said had plotted a coup to form a sharia state.
