Romania: Israeli former MP attacked in prison

TV station says cellmate broke Nati Meir's jaw after learning he is Jewish

Former Romanian Member of Parliament Nati Meir, who was sentenced to four years in jail for tax evasion and fraud, was beaten by his cellmate at the Jilava Prison a few days ago, Ynet reported Tuesday.

Meir, who holds dual Romanian-Israeli citizenship, was hospitalized with a broken jaw.

Romanian television station Realitatea said the attack was anti-Semitic in nature. According to the report, the cellmate attacked Meir after learning he was Jewish.

Meir was transferred to the Jilava Prison after he tried to commit suicide earlier this year at another jail.

Last week Meir was convicted by a court in Bucharest of distributing counterfeit dollar bills. He was sentenced to seven years in prison.

Meir, whose parents lived in Romania before World War II, moved to the country from Israel for business.

He joined the nationalist party Greater Romania during an effort by its leadership to disprove claims that the party was anti-Semitic.

He also served as a mediator in the party's talks with Israeli strategic consultant Eyal Arad ahead of its election campaign.
