Kadima, Labor to boycott debate on leftist groups' funding

Kadima, Labor faction, Arab MKs announce they will not attend discussion on establishment of parliamentary inquiry committee to investigate left-wing groups' funding sources

The Knesset's House Committee will discuss the establishment of a parliamentary commission of inquiry set to investigate left-wing organizations' funding sources on Tuesday, but no dissenting voices will be heard. The Kadima and Labor factions as well as Arab Knesset members announced Wednesday they will not attend the debate.

A letter sent by the Kadima faction to chairman of the Knesset House Committee MK Yariv Levin stated that the faction will not send any representatives on its behalf to serve as members of the inquiry committee. "While not condoning all of these organizations' activities, we believe that that the establishment of a commission of inquiry marks a new low in the Knesset's history. Such an act is dangerous and anti-democratic," the letter noted.

Two weeks ago the Kadima faction decided to require its members to oppose the Yisrael Beiteinu bill proposing the creation of a parliamentary inquiry committee.

Kadima Chairwoman Tzipi Livni said, "An evil spirit has been sweeping over the country, and it is our duty is to stand up against this wave."

She added, "Kadima cannot be a passive participant in this process; our public duty is not to be part of such a thing, and stand against it – both at the Knesset and in public statements."

However, the party did not put up a unified front during the vote on the establishment of the committee. Three Kadima MKs voted in favor of the Yisrael Beiteinu bill: Otniel Schneller, Robert Tibayev and Yulia Shamalov Berkovich; five others opposed, including Nachman Shai, Ze'ev Boim and Meir Sheetrit; while the rest of the faction members did not bother attending the vote, including Livni herself who was on a meeting with EU foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton.
