Egypt: Mubarak, wife interrogated over corruption

Deposed president, wife questioned over suspicion of corruption, misuse of power. Reports claim Mubarak illegally amassed tens of billions of dollars stashed in numerous foreign bank accounts

Egypt's government says deposed President Hosni Mubarak and his wife have been questioned over suspicions they illegally amassed vast wealth.

Mubarak has been questioned several times, but this would be the first time his wife, Suzanne, faced interrogation.

A Justice Ministry statement said interrogators headed to the resort of Sharm el-Sheikh on Thursday to question the couple about corruption and misuse of power.

A report by a financial oversight body said that Mubarak and his family had numerous bank accounts in foreign and local currencies, luxury apartments and palaces and valuable land holdings. Some estimate his fortune in the tens of billions of dollars.

Mubarak, who has denied wrongdoing, was first detained on April 13 and has been in a hospital in Sharm el-Sheikh since he suffered health problems under initial questioning by officials from the public prosecutor's office.

Mubarak also faces charges over deaths of protesters during the popular uprising that toppled him Feb. 11.

Mass demonstrations forced Mubarak to step down on Feb. 11 after three decades in power. Egypt's foreign ministry told its embassies in the Arab world and Western countries on Feb. 22 to freeze the assets of the toppled leader and his family.

Switzerland's Foreign Ministry said earlier this month the country had found 410 million Swiss francs ($462.5 million) traced to Mubarak.
