Facebook won't sell coupons in Israel

Social network decides to end its Deals service after realizing it cannot compete against Groupon

Facebook coupons won't be coming to Israel : After a four-month test, the popular social network has decided to end its Facebook Deals coupon service, essentially realizing it cannot compete against coupon giant Groupon.

"After testing Deals for four months, we've decided to end our Deals product in the coming weeks," the company said in a statement.

"We think there is a lot of power in a social approach to driving people into local businesses," Facebook added in the statement. "We've learned a lot from our test and we'll continue to evaluate how to best serve local businesses."

Nonetheless, Facebook will continue offering its check-in feature, allowing local businesses to reward customers reporting their presence in a certain area.

Many restaurants have been offering discounts and free meals to customers reporting their visits through Facebook in real time.
