The first Tel Aviv Fashion Week in years was launched Sunday evening at the home of the Italian ambassador in Israel, with a special guest – designer Roberto Cavalli.

During the event, which was held at Ambassador Luigi Mattiolo's residence in Ramat Gan, Cavalli met with top Israeli fashion designers, leading businesspeople, Tourism Minister Stas Misezhnikov, and the initiators of the Fashion Week – Moti Reif and Ofir Lev.

The inauguration even was attended by Vice Premier Silvan Shalom, Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai, actress Noa Tishby, fashion designer Gideon Oberson and many others.

"I'm happy I was invited to Israel," Cavalli said Sunday. "I hope you enjoy the show because it will display my new collection alongside my best items from the past. Each of them is part of my heart."

The Tel Aviv Fashion Week opens Monday at the Tachana compound in the south of the city, near the Neve Tzedek neighborhood, and will last three days.

Visitors will be treated to 18 fashion shows displaying the 2012 spring-summer collections of Israel's leading fashion designers.

Dozens of fashion editors, reporters and designers from all around the world have already arrived in Israel and will be joining fashion fans and local industry members, who will enjoy a variety of activities and events and help Tel Aviv regain the title of the "fashion capital of the Middle East."
