Police detain suspects in TA group sex case

Probe into alleged assault continues as police question three teens linked to act

The police on Wednesday detained three teenagers, ages 15-16, allegedly linked to the group sex incident on a Tel Aviv beach two weeks ago.

The police are still looking for the woman involved in the case.

The incident in question took place in early April on Tel Aviv's Bugrashov Beach.

According to available details, a group of men were engaged in sexual acts with a woman who was described as "clearly intoxicated or unstable," in broad daylight.

The incident was witnessed by many passersby and beach-goers, but police officials say they only received two complaints.

Yarkon Subdistrict Police Commander Yoram Ohayon told Ynet that at this point – and barring any evidence to the contrary – the police are investigating the case as a misdemeanor.

"I'm not trying to undermine this event, but we still don't know how serious it really was. At this point, and according to what we know so far this was a misdemeanor – a lewd act in public."

Ohayon noted that only one 100 call was made to the police at the time of the event, and urged the public to be more vigilant: "I call on the public to immediately call the police in such cases.

"Anyone who witnessed the event is asked to contact their nearby police station. The Yarkon Subdistrict Police will investigate this, but as of now we don't even have a formal compliant in the matter.

"The public mustn’t remain indifferent to such acts," he added.

As a misdemeanor, a lewd act in public carries a maximum sentence of six months.
