3 people killed in car crash on Highway 1

Traffic Police chief estimates accident caused by drunken driving, but severe weather conditions may have also played a role

Three people were killed and one person was seriously injured in a car crash on Highway 1 between the Shoresh and Shaar HaGai intersections early Tuesday morning. The victim was rushed to the Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem.

A preliminary investigation suggests that at around 3 am one of the vehicles hit a crash barrier, spun out of control and hit an empty car parked on the side of the road.

The traffic chief added that the other car involved in the crash had likely gotten stuck and was therefore parked on the side of the road. The circumstances behind the accident are still being investigated and it is possible the crash was caused by the stormy weather.

Magen David Adom spokesman said that the victims were all men in their 30s.

A paramedic who arrived at the scene said that police and rescue forces worked hard to pull the men out of the car. "The vehicle was completely crushed," Aharon Oppenheimer said.
