Poisonous frog smuggling attempt, thwarted

The Israel Tax Authority confiscated 30 poison-arrow frogs, smuggled from Holland by two travelers. The frogs were most likely intended for sale to private breeders. The frogs were found in small boxes and the two travelers were interrogated for allegedly trading protected, natural monuments.

Poison-arrow frogs are common in Asia, Central and South American and in Hawaii. They have sharp colors which help to attract and hunt insects and deter predators. The Nature and Parks Authority fears that if the frogs are immersed in the local, natural environment they may harm local amphibians. (Erez Erlichman)
