Officer who took down Afula terrorist receives commendation

Soldier who stopped Afula attacker receives recognition from commanders. 'We are proud of you'

Second lieutenant Yitzhak Mimun received a commendation on Sunday for his quick response to the terror attack in Afula, in which IDF soldier Eden Atias was murdered while sleeping on a bus.

Mimun, a 23-year-old officer who enlisted two years after the Israeli draft age of 18 because he was studying at a yeshiva, is a unit commander in the Neztah Yehuda Battalion. He managed to prevent the terrorist from continuing his onslaught by targeting the killer with his weapon while he was on his way to harming a female soldier.

After he received the commendation, Mimun talked to the press about that day's events.

"While I waited for the bus, I saw an anomalous confrontation and I straight away ran to check on it. I got on the bus, and in the back rows I noticed the terrorist, few seconds after he had stabbed the soldier," he recounted.

"Within a few seconds, I realized we were looking at a terror attack. I aimed my weapon at the attacker… The terrorist froze in place and surrendered momentarily. After I subdued him and realized the immediate threat had passed, I led him to the security forces at the central station," Mimun continued.

At the ceremony, many of Mimun's ranking officers thanked him for his efforts in stopping the 16-year-old terrorist from Jenin. "Mimun stuck to the values he learned as a fighter in Kfir Brigade; he acted with courage, and approached with the purpose of stopping the terrorist on the bus."
