Comptroller begins investigation into Operation Protective Edge

Retired Judge Joseph Shapira met with Prime Minister Netanyahu Thursday, first meeting of investigation, set issues to be investigated

Israel's State Comptroller Joseph Shapira met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday, marking the beginning of his investigation into the conduct of Israel's political and military leadership during Operation Protective Edge.

Following allegations Israel did not comply with international law during the Gaza op and did not conduct an examination of the actions of the IDF in accordance with the law, Judge Shapira announced two months ago he would open a review on the decision-making processes at the political and military level, including the mechanisms of inspection and investigation by the government and IDF.

Shapira met with Prime Minister Netanyahu on Thursday, his first meeting with the Israeli leader aimed at investigating the prime minister's decision-making process and actions during Operation Protective Edge.

Attendees of the meeting included high-ranking officials of the Comptroller's Office, including the managing director of the office and the head of the security system review.

The comptroller's office confirmed the occurrence of the meeting at Ynet's request. The first meeting of the comptroller's investigation aimed to set the issues to be focused on during the investigation. The prime minister will be expected to relay his decision making process and explain his actions during Operation Protective Edge.

The investigation will be carried out in accordance with international law, previous supreme court rulings, findings of reports and conclusions of public commissions in previous years, including a report that examined the inspection and investigation mechanisms in Israel in response to complaints and testimony on violations of international laws of war, and set guidlines for the functioning of these mechanisms.
