UN Special Coordinator for ME says actions taken by Security Council not to replace peace negotiations

Robert Serry, the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process and the UN Secretary-General's special representative to the PLO and Palestinian Authority said on Monday that while actions by the UN Security Council would not be able to take the place of direct peace negotiations between Israelis and the Palestinians, they could prove to be an important step.

The statement by Serry was made after reports surfaced that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas was intending to turn to the UN Security Council on Wednesday with a request to "end the Israeli occupation" within two years.
