Border Policemen shot dead in accidental discharge

Sergeant Shani Avi Gronov, 19, was hit in the head by a bullet accidentally fired from weapon his friend was holding.

Border Policeman Sergeant Shani Avi Gronov, 19, was shot dead in an accidental discharge on Wednesday morning at the Yad Mordechai.

 

 

"Initial investigation found that he was likely killed as a result of an accidental discharge from a weapon held by his friend," a Border Police spokesman said, adding that the investigation has been entrusted to Police Investigation Unit.

The bullet hit the Border Policeman's head and he was critically wounded. Magend David Adom paramedics who arrived at the scene found him with no pulse and tried to resuscitate him, unsuccessfully. He was taken to the Barzilai Medical Center in Ashkelon, where he was pronounced dead.

 

A Border Police spokesman said Gronov was a combat soldier in the Southern Border Police and left parents and two sisters behind.

 

Three months ago, a 21-year-old man was wounded from a gun's accidental discharge in an apartment in Jerusalem. MDA paramedics evacuated him in serious condition with a stomach injury to the trauma unit at the Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem's Ein Kerem, where he was taken into surgery. His situation later improved to moderate condition. Another man who was with him was detained by police.

  

In early October, a soldier was wounded from an accidental discharge from a weapon near Kibbutz Alumim on the Gaza border. He was airlifted to the Soroka Medical Center in Be'er Sheva where he was hospitalized in moderate condition.
