Egypt official says security forces kill extremist leader

CAIRO - Egyptian troops killed the leader and founder of extremist group Ajnad Misr in a shootout at a Cairo apartment on Sunday, an Egyptian security official said.

Security forces had been following the movements of Hammam Mohamed Attia, 33, and surrounded the residential high-rise building in a busy neighborhood before raiding it at dawn Sunday.

They found explosives and firearms in the apartment in Giza, in the western part of greater Cairo.

Ajnad Misr, or Soldiers of Egypt, has claimed responsibility for a bombing on a bridge leading to an upscale neighborhood in central Cairo that killed a policeman and wounded at least two passers-by earlier in the day.
