Meet the Ramat Gan Safari's newest addition

Safari's favorite rhino has given birth to newest calf in the zoo's breeding program, which has so far seen the births of 27 baby rhinos.

The Ramat Gan Safari's favorite rhino, Keren Peles, gave birth to her first calf on Monday afternoon. Do you have a name for the newborn? You can suggest it now at the Safari's Facebook page, but it has to start with the letter K.

The calf snuggled up to its mom in a shady grove in the Safari's African area, and stood up on its own a mere few minutes after the exciting birth.

The calf's proud father is a 35-year-old rhino named Atari, who is 29 years older than the calf's mother Keren Peles, named after a well-known Israeli singer. Safari workers said that the two broad-lipped rhinos fell in love at first sight.

Wide-lipped rhinos are an endangered species. In an effort to combat declining numbers, Keren arrived at the Safari three years ago from a zoo in Pretoria, South Africa, as part of a breeding program within the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria.

Keren Peles and her fellow rhinos are known as a sneaky bunch, and in January of this year they took advantage of a distracted guard and exited the Safari through one of its side gates. The three rhinos managed to make it as far as a side parking lot adjacent to the Safari before being captured and returned.

The newest baby is the 27th calf to be born at the Safari, which has been a powerful force in raising rhino numbers in zoos, in the hope that the same success will be achievable among wild rhino populations.
