A gunman who reportedly opened fire in a cinema complex in the western German town of Viernheim has been shot dead after police stormed the complex, the Mannheimer Morgen newspaper reported on Thursday, citing the interior minister of the state of Hesse.
Police said earlier there was a "threat situation" at a movie theater in a town in southwestern Germany which probably involved a weapon.
According to initial reports, between 20 and 50 people were wounded during a shooting at the cinema complex after the shooter barricaded himself in. However, it turned out that no one had been injured.
A German online magazine, Focus Online, said that the police arrested the shooter but it later emerged that he had been shot to death.
