CNN apologizes for chyron offensive to Jews

A quote from an extreme-right racist leader in the US questioning whether Jews were people which was displayed on the network's TV show provoked fury from viewers; CNN anchor: 'I'm furious and my staff heard from me.'

CNN has issued an apology to its viewers for a chyron it displayed on one of its television shows on Monday which read, “Alt-right founder questions if Jews are people.”

The graphic, which was displayed in the context of a discussion on the rise of the extreme-right in the US, provoked an outcry on the internet forcing the network to clarify the meaning behind the graphic and issue an apology.

One of the topics discussed on the network’s show, The Lead, was centered on the far-right organization in the country known as Alt-right—a loose group of people with far right ideologies who reject mainstream conservatism in the United States—led by Richard Spencer who posed the offensive question.

“I'm furious about that chyron and my staff has heard from me. Unacceptable,” CNN anchor Jake Tapper tweeted in anger shortly after the show was broadcast. Tapper is currently on vacation.

The network itself also issued a statement explaining that the decision to display the chyron had been an error of judgement.

President-elect Donald Trump commented on the white supremacist group on Tuesday repudiating and condemning them, despite the fact that on Saturday they held a gathering during which several crowd members were filmed raising their hands in a Nazi salute in celebration of his election.
