Ilai & Nir Omri
Ilai Nir, the 10-year-old boy who was critically injured when he fell from a cliff at the Tze'elim Stream on Friday, passed away on Sunday at the Soroka Medical Center in Be'er Sheva.
His father, Dr. Omri Nir, tried to save him when he held his son to his body as the pair fell, absorbing most of the impact. Omri, a researcher of ethnic groups in the Middle East and the modern history of Lebanon at Hebrew University of Jerusalem, was immediately killed. He was married with three children, including Ilai.
Doctors declared Ilai dead after his situation worsened further on Sunday. His family gave its consent to donate Ilai's organs. Both father and son will be buried together on Monday.
The hospital announced that Ilai suffered injuries to multiple systems including a very serious head injury. "During the weekend, efforts were made to stabilize his condition by a multidisciplinary team, but unfortunately, his condition deteriorated to the point of irreversible brain damage. Today in the afternoon after his condition deteriorated further, the doctors had to pronounce him dead."
