Israeli killed in Bolivia fought in Protective Edge

During a post-army trip to South America, 23-year-old Dor Jian was killed when the ATV he was riding careened down a ravine; ‘He was so full of love, so giving.’

The Israeli backpacker who was killed Monday in an ATV accident in Bolivia has been identified as 23-year-old Dor Jian from Kiryat Ono, who served in the IDF's artillery unit and took part in Operation Protective Edge in Gaza in 2014.

Dor, the youngest in the family, embarked on a six-month trip to South America in December with four of his childhood friends—a trip he had been planning for months.

Dor was killed when the ATV he was riding careened down a ravine in the Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon), near Bolivia's capital of La Paz.

On Monday at 11am, Dor spoke with his father for the last time. ''He told my father the trip filled him with energy, about the amazing things he got to experience and about the people he met," said his brother, Ben. "He sounded very happy."

The family said: ''Our Dor, our youngest son and brother, was so full of love, so giving. His smile will remain etched in our hearts forever. He will be greatly missed.''

Since Israel has no embassy in Bolivia, the Foreign Ministry has been dealing with the Israeli Consul in Lima, Peru.

Roberto Nelkenbaum, a Hebrew speaking businessman serving as an Honorary Consul in Bolivia, is handling the arrangements to have the body flown home to Israel.
