Caregiver steals thousands from Holocaust survivor

A caregiver confesses to stealing thousands of shekels from his patient, who is an elderly Holocaust survivor, to repay loans he took on the grey market.

A 65-year-old man who worked as a caregiver for an 87-year-old Holocaust survivor has been arrested on suspicion of stealing thousands of shekels from the elderly man, which he used to repay loans he took on the grey market.

The Holocaust survivor, a resident of Petah Tikva, filed a complaint with the police after he noticed that his debit card was missing from his wallet on several occasions, and that withdrawals of thousand of shekels were made using it.

A police investigation revealed recordings of the suspect using the debit card in several different banks in Petah Tikva.

The elderly man employed the caretaker privately. It appears that the latter learnt the card's PIN, before stealing it on numerous occasions to use it to withdraw money and then return it.

During his interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime, saying he used the money to repay loans he took on the grey market.

He was arrested and will be brought to the Petah Tikva Magistrates' Court on Monday.
