Head of Civil Administration visits soldier wounded in stabbing attack

SSgt. Salem Fuaz gives Brig. Gen. Ahavat Ben Hur her account of the attack that left her hospitalized with a stab wound; 'She asked me to help her exit the crossing and when I turned around, she pulled out a knife and stabbed me in the back.'

Speaking from her hospital bed in the Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem's Ein Kerem on Monday, SSgt. Salem Fuaz recounted the stabbing attack at the Qalandiya checkpoint in which she was wounded.

"The Palestinian terrorist called me. I approached her and she asked me to help her exit the crossing. When I turned around, she pulled out a knife and stabbed me in the back," said Fuaz.

Head of the Civil Administration, Brig. Gen. Ahavat Ben Hur, who was visiting Fuaz in the hospital, told her, "I'm happy I can be here to visit you today when you only have a light wound. Your presence at the crossing everyday affects thousands of residents, and unfortunately today, a terrorist chose to take advantage of the fact that our representatives are deployed at any time to help the Palestinian population. I wish you a speedy recovery and come back to us as soon as possible. "

SSgt. Fuaz, 25, from Eilabun, enlisted six years ago as a combat soldier in the Caracal Battalion before transferring to the Border Police.

Two years ago, she began to serve in the Civil Administration as a checkpoint NCO. In this capacity, she is responsible for operations at the crossing, providing a permanent presence in the busy morning hours and being in contact with the local Palestinian population to provide assistance.

The Shin Bet identified Fuaz's attacker as Asya Kabaneh, 41, from the village of Duma near Nablus.

Asya, who is a married mother of 9, said during investigation that for a long time she has been in conflict with her husband, who threatened to deport her to her family in Jordan.

The investigation also revealed that she had fought with her husband the night before over the education of their children and as a result, she decided to carry out an attack in order for the security forces to shoot her because—in her words—she was fed up with her life.
