European diplomats opposed the United States' plan to change UNIFIL's mandate in southern Lebanon and expand its powers to closely monitor the activities of the Hezbollah terror organization, the Al-Hayat newspaper reported quoting diplomatic sources.
A European diplomat was quoted as saying that "a change in the mandate of UNIFIL is a dangerous act that could undermine the stability of the environment in which the international force operates in southern Lebanon. This is a matter that needs to be treated with discretion."
