J'lem to host Daniel Pearl memorial concert

iPalpiti Orchestral Ensemble of International Laureates to hold special performance to mark four years since journalist's murder

The iPalpiti Orchestral Ensemble of International Laureates, which includes musicians from 20 countries, will host a memorial concert next Sunday, February 26, in memory of American journalist and musician Daniel Pearl. Pearl was kidnapped and murdered by Islamic terrorists four years ago in Pakistan.

The concert, featuring conductor Eduard Schmieder, will be held in the Jerusalem YMCA and will include Mendelssohn's Symphony for Strings number 10 in B minor, Shostakovich's chamber symphony, and Astor Piazzolla's Four Seasons of Buenos Aires.

The concert is part of a series of musical events held each year around the world in the framework of the Daniel Pearl Foundation. Pearl's parents created the foundation after their son's murder in order to preserve his memory, believing that music can win out over murder.

Honorary guests at events in Pearl's memory will include Elton John, Barbra Streisand, Herbie Hancock, Yizhak Pearlman, Zubin Mehta, Hamza al-Din, Ravi Shankar and members of the rock band REM.

The iPalapiti orchestra will also participate in the "Classical Winter" chamber music festival, to be held from February 23-25 in Eilat.
