PA official: Shin Bet threatened to expel me from Jerusalem

Jerusalem Portfolio appointee Hatem Abdel Kader says was warned over his political activities within capital's limits

Hatem Abdel Kader, holder of the Jerusalem Portfolio in the Palestinian Authority was arrested Tuesday after failing to comply with a subpoena for police questioning.

Kader later told Ynet the police and Shin Bet officers threatened that they will have his permanent Jerusalem residency and his Israeli ID revoked, if he continued his political activities in the capital.

Kader was arrested while en route to a protest rally. "Shin Bet officers informed me that if I remain politically active within Jerusalem I would be expelled from the city and my ID would be revoked," hr said.

The Jerusalem Police confirmed calling Kader in for questioning, saying it was "a general inquiry."

Meanwhile, the backlash to Monday's Gaza flotilla raid found its way into Jerusalem, as over 100 people rallied against Israel's actions.

Some two weeks ago, a decision to expel Hamas member Muhammad Hassan Abu Tir from Jerusalem, enraged the group.

Abu Tir was summoned to a Shin Bet interrogation just hours after his release from Israeli prison, where he spent four years.

He was told he was expelled from Jerusalem, and was given until June 19 to leave.

The decision, said Hamas, "Is the result of the pursuit of unnecessary negotiations and the result of the Palestinian Authority's security cooperation with the Zionist enemy, which uses it as an excuse to commit crimes against our people and holy places.

"This is an attempt to hurt our leaders, the Palestinian people's symbols and selectmen and empty the city of its Palestinian residents," said Hamas.
