61. a double agent ?
Nina   (05.24.07)
Opra needs to balance her previous actions against Israel. This sounds like a double face action. I hope that it does not turn out stinking. Shall we give her a chance ?
62. Oprah
Jeff Jubinville ,   Cranbrook, Canada   (05.24.07)
It is really interesting to see that Oprah sympathizes with the Israeli occupation of Palestine. Wonder if she would like to take a look at Israel from the Palastinian side of the security fence and then see if she still sympathizes the illegal occupation and suppression of entire country. I fear that she will just be another celebrity instructing the no minds that consume her drivel how and what to think on any given subject. It should be obvious that a person with her scope and influence should really study a subject before she accepts the suffering of only the Israeli people! Then maybe we could get some honest and educated programs for the masses to consume instead of soft propaganda.
63. Oprah Again Manipulated By the Master Hoaxster Elie Wiesel
Daniel McGowan ,   Geneva, NY USA   (05.24.07)
When Elie Wiesel took Oprah Winfrey to Auschwitz the choreography was perfect. Jewish suffering was paramount; remember the six million, the gas chambers, the Zyklon B, the death marches, and “Arbeit Macht Frei.” Ignore the facts that none of Wiesel’s family was gassed, that 50 million non-Jews were killed, that Wiesel chose to leave Auschwitz with the Nazis rather than be liberated by the Russians as was Anne Frank’s father. And certainly ignore the ethnic cleansing and murder of perhaps two million Germans, mostly civilians, after the war. Now Elie will take Oprah to Israel to “sympathize with the suffering of the people of Israel” meaning the suffering of Jews, of course. He won’t be taking her to the ghetto known as Gaza, where 1.4 million Palestinians languish in hunger and sickness. He won’t be taking her to the concentration camp at Ketziot in the Negev Desert. Nor will this icon of the Holocaust Industry be taking Oprah to Deir Yassin, the site of a massacre of Arab civilians perpetrated by his employer, The Irgun, in April 1948. When he accompanies her at the most famous Holocaust memorial at Yad Vashem, they will be looking across the valley at Deir Yassin, but Elie will not mention it nor apologize for it. Nor will they discuss on camera or privately that today over half the people within the borders controlled by Israel are not Jews. Such inconvenient facts fly in the face of the quest to build a Jewish state in Palestine, a quest that is patently racist. First Auschwitz, now Israel -- what is next for the Oprah and Elie show? Perhaps they could recreate the Jewish slave ship Mazeltof and sail together from Africa to Curacao and on to America. Oprah at the prow, Elie at the wheel, the hold packed with slaves sailing into Hasbara. Daniel McGowan Deir Yassin Remembered 4174 Scandling Center Geneva, NY 14456 www.deiryassin.org 315 781-3418
64. All the "Palestinians" commenting here
Lisa ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (05.24.07)
seem to be functionally illiterate. You should really encourage those of you who actually have a good command of English to comment here.

gm ,   south africa   (05.24.07)
There is such democracy in Israel that they even allow a person suffering from dementia to make comments on this article without evening screening the comments first. Does Eli Wiesel's family have to be gassed for the holocaust to be more horrific?? The subject of Oprah's show was genocide, not WW2!! Why would Jews want to go to communist Russia where they weren't free to practice their religion? Why can a Jewish state not exist in Israel, espcially since there is archaelogical proof that this land belonged to the Jews? Why are the Jordanians not being asked for land for 'palestinians', a nation which did not exist until yasser arafat decided it did? I am trying to find strength in your argument but I can't. Maybe you need to join Oprah on her tour.

The "palestinians" are a humanitarian issue, but abbas didn't invite her to Gaza. If abbas did, would Jews be allowed to ask if Israeli victims are a humanitarian issue? probably not in your eyes. Tell me who was the government in Palestine before 1948?? Oh, wait, it was under British control and Yasser arafat lived in Egypt. When did Israel attack Gaza. Again, I am so silly, they left Gaza just so they could attack it again, because the previous year was boring in Israel and they wanted something to do. Listen, you fool, Israel is suffering dealing with irrational idiots like you and the newly formed palestinian nation.

Shame on you!
68. Shame On U Oprah!!
Rimal ,   Palestine   (05.24.07)
You were always a great feminine model in my eyes. How come you can't differentiate the victim from the terrorist!!!
69. Trip to Israel
Pauline Coffman ,   Oak Park IL USA   (05.24.07)
Oprah: I applaud your going to Israel, but beg you to look at Palestinian suffering while you're there, too. The Sabeel Center in Jerusalem can help you see their situation. I'm not excusing the violence on either side, but there are two versions of this terrible story. Thank you.
70. GOOD! BUT ALSO VISIT WITH THE PALESTINIANS
Dottie Villesvik ,   Marysville, WA   (05.24.07)
Dear Oprah, i am one of your fans and watch your program regularly. As you know, there is always two sides to every story, so I plead with you to meet people like Jeff Hallper, an Israeli, and founder of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolition. Also, Naim Stifan Ateek who is Canon of St. George's Cathedral in Jerusalem. There are other Jewish voices for peace...Go behind the wall into Bethlehem, and meet the Rev. Dr. Mitri Raheb and hear his story. He is pastor of the Evangelical Christmas Lutheran Church in Bethlehem. Meet with the Palestinian people. Go into the refugee camps. Hear the voices of those in the Occupied Territories. PLEASE!! THANK YOU.
71. Oprah's visit
Yaakov ,   USA   (05.25.07)
Fears that Oprah will do more harm than good to Israel by a visit is unwarranted. Oprah has the utmost admiration for Eli Wiesel. It would be incredibly disloyal and insulting to Wiesel if Oprah took this as an opportunity to bash Israel. She is not the type of person to do such a thing. As things on the ground stand, it would be far too dangerous for her to venture into Samaria, Judea, and especially Gaza, due to the internecine violence of the arabs there and the radical salafi anti-western sentiments. When Al Sharjpton visited Israel several years ago, he returned singing Israel's praises, including the story of the rescue of Ethiopian Jews and the treatment they had recieved in Israel. Sharpton, being a civil rights advocate and leftist politician of dubious ethics was a far greater threat fo Israeli PR than is Oprah, especially since she is being escorted by Eli Wiesel.
72. Oprah is so pro-Palestinian - it isn't funny
miri   (05.25.07)
Oprah is a member of a pro-Palestinian church in Chicago (Trinity United Church of Christ) that voted to divest from Israel. Still don't believe it? Go to her web site, www.oprah.com and do a search on 'Israel' or 'Palestinians' and read the many articles showing sympathy to suicide bombers who have murdered Israelis. Read about her charities for Palestinians that she raises money for. Then decide for yourself whether Israel should roll out a red carpet for her.
73. Oprah/Israel visit
Hill, Miriam ,   Steilacoom, WA   (05.25.07)
That's good. Be sure to talk to the soldiers that started "Breaking the Silence," and be sure to spend and equal amount of time with the Palestinians.

75. Oprah to Israel
Judy Runions ,   Seattle USA   (05.25.07)
In fairness to the peace and reconciliation process in Israel, I urge Oprah to visit the Wall, talk to the Palestinian people, including the children and see BOTH sides of the story. Perhaps Elie Weisel would coordinate a meeting with Father Elias Chacour while she is there.
76. #63 dishonors Wiesels, Shoah victims
maccabit   (05.25.07)
#63 should only be referred to by number, like the numbers tatooed on the arms of the Wiesel family and millions of others. Elie Wiesel's mother and sister were murdered in Auschwitz. He and his father were slave laborers in various concentration camps. His father died in Buchenwald from dysentary and starvation, his body thrown into the crematorium. Why were the words of this Holocaust denier posted here?

My definition of a terrorist is a person/group who deliberate kill civilian men women and/or children indescriminantly for their own political purposes. This is how I would define Hizbollah (firing from behind dence civilian populouses (human shields), Islamic Jihad and Hamas who fire rockets at a town indescriminately to cause a much terror, damage and death as possible. Or one of the above groups plus the Al Asqas Martyrs Brigade (the clue is in the name with 'Martyrs') and PFLP who try to blow themselves up on buses, in schools, religious meals, shopping malls to kill as many people, civilian or otherwise as possible. Whereas a group or army of a Democratic country which are there to take these people on and with the way this opposition cowardly cower behind civilians unfortunately kill a few as collateral damage can describe the IDF. As easily as it could describe the UK, US, British, Dutch, Polish, Italian, Danish, Spanish etc armies, ones from a civiliased Democracy. I think Oprah has got it the right way round..........

79. The Talmud as an Oprah book pick!
Nick ,   NYC, USA   (05.25.07)
Oprah is extremely influential in the US, and I see this as a good PR opportunity for Israel. As an aside, don't any alleged "Palestinians" here speak and write English? While I'm sympathetic to ESL students, at least develop a grade school mastery of the language before trying to opine here.
80. Oprah's Solidarity Visit to Israel
Anne Remley ,   Ann Arbor, MI USA   (05.25.07)
Please make sure that Oprah gets to visit the West Bank with israeli peace activists as her guide. Jeff Halper or others at ICAHD or Gush Shalom could help. She needs to see how the suffering of the Israelis is entwined with the repression, suffering, and virtual imprisonment of the Palestinians.

Vocabulary class: Judaism: Religion believing in the One God, deriving from the Tribe of Juda, of the Children of Israel. Christianity: Religion "believing in the One God", derived from the Prophet Jesus (peace upon him) and the view of many that he was crucified, hence Jesus Christ, hence Christianity. Islam: Religion literally, and in translation meaning: Peace in submission to the One God. God is One, and Muhammad is His last Messenger. I am witness to this, and witness that this earth was created for mankind, and that there is a Day of Judgement to come, to discern between Muslims, and those who reject Faith in the One True God. To me my Path, to you yours, but definitely, we Muslims will not stand down in the face of your petty oppression and claims, to this which belongs to God alone.

(05.25.07)
How is it that all of you are Americans, all sign your names along with your city and state of residence, and you're all spewing virtually the identical Palestinian victimhood propaganda?
85. Oprah won't bash Israel, but will sympathize with the Pals.
Howard ,   NYC   (05.26.07)
She is not a thinker. She is more comfortable handling individual human interest issues. If she gets near a mother or a sister of a jailed "militant", for example, she'll go weak at the knees and make a rather predictable pronouncement about their need for justice and an end to the occupation.... etc., etc. That is her main problem: she is an emotional creature, not an analyst. So, Israel, be very, very careful.

Ruth K. ,   United States   (05.27.07)
December 2006, McGowan wrote about his visit in a Germany prison with the world's leading Holocaust denier Ernst Zuendel (Zundel). I read McGowan's disgusting trash on David Duke's web site, although you can find it on several other antisemitic hate sites.
