It is not an empty thing. People who pray to a false god who are of Jewish origins, will most definately suffer. The saying only the good die young is directly translated to the curses. So many express casual "oks" for people to continue a road to destruction. Sins are in no way all paid up. The account and the accountant are still running each an account. I saw it as a firefighter - people pay daily. You are not forgiven unless you see your sin and cease from it to return to G-d.
