1. Professor of hatred
JG   (08.09.07)
Another one who enjoys the benefits of a democracy while spitting on its institutions. How would the "Professor" act if an officer wished the same thing on him? Bet he'd try to sue him. I hope the "Professor" is sued to kingdome come.
2. I heard yesterday
Sagi ,   Israel   (08.09.07)
on Israel radio a number of respected journalists and public figures describing this man's behaviour as animalistic. I wish to add my endorsement to this apt description.
3. double standard
yosef ,   israel   (08.09.07)
not that I condone what he said and to be honest I find it disgusting but how come everytime someone from the right calls a soldier or police officer a nazi and wishes he was dead the entire country calls for his head but when a left wing person such as olmert's wife and daughter say the samething nobody even raises an eyebrow?
4. Wishing someone dead
Chaim ,   Australia   (08.09.07)
In this modern democratic world, do we really need laws preventing someone from wishing someone dead? Witches were once put to death for similar offences, have we not moved on from there?
5. free press
eliezer ,   jerusalem   (08.09.07)
is this not an attempt of squashing free speech or can only the leftest do these things and get away with it?
6. and this is an education professor?????
lucy ,   rechovot   (08.09.07)
7. Cursing professor to be probed
ajs ,   ashdod israel   (08.09.07)
Oh Poor Demacracy, Nothing like an attack on freedom of speech. Exactly who did he incite. Poor little leftist, they just want their cake and not share it with anyone.
8. Farce of the day
Marlene N. ,   New York City   (08.09.07)
Palestinians can be killed with impunity, and is there rarely even an investigation (much less criminal), but don't dare to wish death upon a member of Israel's army because that it is a crime!
9. Too cowardly to go after hamas, fatah
Marcel ,   Florida   (08.09.07)
So who is left for the authorities to target ? You have now given fatah terrorist a free pass even after they failed to turn in their weapons . You allow Hamas to build up their forces in Gaza and do nothing but insignificant targetings. But you do go after fellow Jews who resist your evil rule.
10. Good Bye Democracy
Sam Weinstein ,   USA   (08.09.07)
Good Bye Democracy Hello Dictatorship. Good Bye Free Speech
11. Remember
charles ,   petach tikva   (08.09.07)
it were this kind of words who brought us the assassination of our prime minister , Yitschak Rabin z.l. . Enough of this hatred towards governement officials . This has nothing to do with freedom of expression . Freedom of expression allows you to have your ideas , your religious beliefs , and to publish them . Historical facts can't be denied , this is also not a freedom of expression . In this case this professor wanted someone to die , this has to be punished .
12. #4 the curse the Prof used is very close 2 a biblical curse
it carries more ,   power then witches   (08.09.07)

Esther ,   Ofarim, Israel   (08.09.07)
who uses foul language?? That will keep our police forces busy..
15. #11- Remember Avishai Raviv?
LEE ,   NY, USA   (08.09.07)
A government hired and paid provocateur. Remember Rabin giving orders to fire on the Altalena, resulting in the murder of 13 fellow Jews, some holocaust survivors among them? Of course you wouldn't. It doesn't serve your agenda.
16. Police complain of manpower and money problems yet will take
RBY ,   Tel Aviv   (08.09.07)
on this loser case that exemplifies the height of Israeli absurdities. Since when is it a crime to curse someone, cast a spell on someone or wish for something bad to happen to someone? What are we a bunch of ignorant medieval superstitious peasants? Why not place the whole country under shariah law? It makes as much sense as this investigation.
17. There is a difference between cursing and foul language
a really huge ,   difference   (08.09.07)
18. KOL HAKAVOD PROF WEISS
ACO SHUMADINAC ,   BLA-BLABLA   (08.09.07)
19. Universities *Should* Teach The Truth
emanon ,   USA   (08.09.07)
Even though the truth may not be pretty. What happened in Gaza was wrong. What happened in Hebron is worse because Israel should learn from its mistakes. What next? The terrorists will have a new base of operations for it's attacks against Israel. Once again, Israel supplied the base of operations to the enemy.
20. So many enlightened, intellectuals
Kyle ,   Southpark, CO, USA   (08.09.07)
So many enlightened, secular intellectuals out there who are scared of the boogey man.
21. Lee , NY , learn history
charles ,   petach tikva   (08.09.07)
Rabin , z.l. was listening to the orders of the governement . A discident army could not be tolerated in the newly born state . One authority for one state , that so in every country . avishai raviv , a governement provocateur ? in your extreme rightist view only , because this serves your ideology .With your so nationalistic ideas , what are you still doing in NY , you had to be here . Probably also one of those who talk , but stay in their faraway galuth .
22. Esther , Ofarim
charles ,   petach tikva   (08.09.07)
Every driver on the road is not a university professor , and the insulted donkeys are not insulted for carrying out governement orders , but for their behaviour on the road . Generally they deserve to be named very "nicely"
23. Holy Moses...
ER ,   Canada   (08.09.07)
...what an uproar. And I thought he was quite restrained. I’m glad they didn’t interview me!
24. #21, charles, you forget history?
freejay ,   Israel   (08.09.07)
What about Rabin ordering that the Altalena be fired upon??????? You didnt answer that question because you dont have an answer!
25. Political use of police investigations in Israel 'democracy'
Dr. Reuven Bar-On ,   Israel   (08.09.07)
If Prof. Weiss is indicted, tried and punished for ‘cursing’ someone, then the same should be done to a very large number of Israelis who wish others should die in an even more direct fashion than the professor allegedly did. For example, how often do we hear “alavai sh’tamut” (roughly translated to “I wish you should die”) traditionally followed by “amen” (roughly translated to “I believe it to be” or “so be it”). Although cursing occurs frequently in Israel as well as in other countries many times a day on a daily basis, indictments are nearly non-existent especially in truly democratic countries that uphold the rights of freedom of expression. Whereas the idea of cursing someone with the intent that the curse will come true is extremely primitive, it is equally primitive to indict, try and punish someone in a modern western society for such a ‘crime’ (which would mean that the criminal and judicial systems in that society believe that the curse is a ‘real’ attack on the person’s life). Here, it is logical to assume that those wishing to indict, try and punish Prof. Weiss are interested in doing so for political reasons rather than for ‘believing’ that a verbal curse has the physical power to kill a human being or any other animal! Be this as it may, requests for ‘investigations’ for political reasons are foreign to modern, enlightened and democratic societies. In this respect however, it is important to remember that the founding fathers of Israeli ‘democracy’ came from Eastern Europe in which actual democracy was non-existent other than in word alone; moreover, this style of democracy has existed in Israel until the present day in various forms. The use of police investigations in Israel are often rooted in early twentieth century Eastern European political tradition. Last, if the professor and others truly wish that something bad would happen to the soldiers, policemen and their commanding officers (all the way up the chain of command to the Prime Minister) in order to stop the truly criminal evacuation of Jews from their homes in the oldest Jewish city, they should have taken stronger, more aggressive and efficient action rather than merely ‘cursing’ them!
26. society must condemn and ostracize people such as hillel wei
shalom ,   jerusalem   (08.09.07)
unfortunately hillel weiss has been for many years a hero to too many people in israel. the problem is not whether to press charges against him but rather whether the leadership religious and other of the country will unequivocally denounce his remarks I am waiting for the chief rabbis and for the leaders of the Juda and Sameria council and council of rabbis to denounce him However, I'm afraid that once again they will put their ideology of land above all else
27. #21- Rabin was just following orders?
LEE ,   NY, USA   (08.09.07)
That line of reasoning rings a bell, doesn't it? Besides the obvious argument against such reasoning, are you suggesting that such an attitude deserves to be emulated. May I assume from your reasoning that if you were a soldier in the IDF and was ordered by your government to shoot to kill your fellow Jews, you would comply for the sake of avoiding a discident army, just as Rabin did? And then you ask why I'm not in Israel.
28. no, probe smollmert instead!!
oded   (08.09.07)
29. FREEDOM OF SPEECH!!!
al mann ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (08.09.07)
This democracy is a joke, isn't it? Religious people can be demonized in the media. It's so easy and doesn'ttake tomuch effort. Yet, are those seculars demonized with all the corruption or is there a constant cover-up of activity. Well perhapr coverups are a part of democracy too. Hurray for us!
30. Move to China and Regulate Speech There
akiva ,   Maaleh Adumim   (08.09.07)
