I don't believe that Bush wrote such a letter - it sounds like a lot of hogwash to me. Bush is an ethical human being and I for one admire him. In any case, if Israel were to give up the Golan for peace with Syria it would be based on a slow withdrawal over a period of 25 years of peaceful relations with them.

Bush like Olmert and even Abbas as things stand right now a lame duck and has no authrotiy to make deals on Israels behalf. As for Abbas you would have thought he had more important things to deal with like taking Gaza back from Hamas and working on negotiating the creation of a state for his own people not coming to fight Assads corner. Israel needs the Golan more than it needs a peace treaty with Syria or even Syria breaking ties with Iran. What does Iran get from this relationship with Syira? Assad coming with a begging bowl for more money to pay his debts and to buy some new MIGS. A friend to help promote propoganda. Syria doesnt provide Iran with anything useful so Syria breaking its ties with Iran might be good for left wing propoganda purposes but as far as eliminating the Iranian threat goes it does nothing. What will Israel get out of it. Half a million Syrians flooding the Golan overnight creating a potential Gaza which Assad has plausable deniability when terror attacks are carried out. Assad armed with F16's & Abrams tanks rather than MIGS & T72s which would be the customary part of any peace treaty just as it was with Egypt & Jordan. 30 thousand jews in the Golan would be made refugees probably along with a similar number of non Israeli Druze who will be driven out by the flood of arabs and rather than start wanting to live under Assad they are going to start looking to Israel for citizenship. Syria will be right up to the borders of the Kineret and knowing Livni, probably Obama, Assad with support from all arab states & the palestinians Israel will share the Kineret waters. Even with American financial support and which given the current economic climate would be limited at best it would still take the country into recesion for over a decade with the cost of housing the Golan refugees, moving military bases, lost income from Golan businesses, that doesnt even include the money the government would be paying in unemployment untill these 30,000+ jews & possibly druze find jobs. Its been three years now and most of the 8,000 jews from Gaza are living in tempory accomodation and are unemployed costing the state millions and the Gaza withdraw alone cost over $1 billion and leaving the Golan would be alot more expensive than leaving Gaza. So a peace treaty will destroy Israel economicly and security wise. It will be a gift for Syria who will get American weapons, probably some cash handouts to pay all his debts, Assad will become a respectable leader in the west and possibly even getting the share Kineret water. Iran will loose a parasite that it doesnt need. Its a win win bargin for everybody but Israel but Israel is the one everybody demands to pay the price for damage to its own interests.

It is time to return Golan back to the Syrian. it is the right thing to do because you can not steal land by force and claim it is yours. The world will support this solution and I am sure that lots of Israeli will support it too.

The only time Bush was usfull to Israel was when Arik Sharon was running the show in Israel. Sharon made a mistake with the Gaza withdrawl but like no other Israeli politician he had the ability to stand up to the American president and push him around to a degree. After the loss of Sharon and Olmerts rise to power and Bush making people like Rice his advisors everything changed. Olmert was now running around trying to kiss Assads ass and waving the Golan in the air. Bush played poker with Iran saying there was a military option then Iran called his bluff and he folded. Not that he would do anything anyway if he could but Bush outright refused the sale of refueling tankers out of fear they may be used against Iran. This despite the fact the Saudis had only recently placed an order for a number of Airbus tankers so as far as the US is concerned everybody can have these toys but Israel. Bush in his last ditch attempt to create some kind of legacy that doesnt involve Iraq, Afghanistan or sparking a global recesion then he is putting the heat on Israel to make more and more concesions to sponsors of terror. What happened to George Bush the G-D fearing christian who belived America had a duty to support Israel?

But why Israel would even consider it is beyond all understanding or even rational thought! If this is Bush's best idea on how to bring these two countries to peace, then he is totally out of touch with reality. Let's just give Syria Texas. After all, it was stolen from Mexico anyway.
