61. circumcision
Odie ,   USA   (11.21.08)
Because G-D commanded the Jew to be circumcised on the 8th day, that should be respected and not changed. As for me, I was circumcised at age 46 for health reasons.......just wished it was done on the 8th day also. The comparison between having this little operation is like driving a VW before and a BMW now. I do not regret it at all and neither does my wife.
62. Let the Boys Decide
Johan Odin ,   Oslo, Norway   (11.21.08)
To mutilate an infant’s body because of the parents religious belief is barbaric, and should be banned. Let the boy grow old enough to make his own decision. Those religious groups still practicing ancient rituals will just have to update their practices to cope with the realities of civilized society.
63. 24: Circumcism is much less traumatic eight days after birth
Rivkah   (11.21.08)
than as a teenager or adult. When I was in the Navy Medical Service Corps, a lot of corpsmen decided to be circumcised after learning about the health benefits. It was days of soreness and anything that caused even a slight erection was very painful. It is a minor procedure for an infant and that is when it should be done. You may not want a covenant with the Lord, but babies are much wiser and closer to the Lord and would agree if they could speak because children are more likely to love the Lord and to want to obey His instructions than grownups.
64. A Very Smart Move For The Danes
Bill Foonman ,   Jacksonville, USA   (11.21.08)
Anyone who has visited Scandinavia is very well aware of the massive infiltration of Muslims to these countries. This move is not directed at the Jewish communities but appears to be a very astute ploy to encourage the Muslims to return home as they are - for the most part - neither wanted nor accepted by the locals.
65. to #49 Interference in other peoples religious beliefs
Susan ,   Kfar Saba   (11.21.08)
What is barbaric is their interference with other people's religious beliefs. Like in Sweden they banned kosher slaughter and in France Muslim girls who want to be modest can't wear a head scarf to school. Considering how a lot of girls dress now-a-days, I think a little modesty is a good thing. Any woman who has give birth knows how hard it would be to travel with a one week old infant. I could hardly get into the car to drive half an hour to the hall where we held my son's bris. And what about a woman who has had a c-section? To have to travel to another country after major surgery. In the US there is a controversy about circumcision amongst non-Jews. Ok, it's their choice whether to circumcize their child. But our tradition has nothing to do with health. It has to do with deep religious befief. Thank G-d that the US( where I come from) would never pass such laws. It's against the Constitution. The Supreme Court would strike it down right away if anyone tried.
66. denmark circumcision ban
Paul Mason ,   Hobart Australia   (11.21.08)
Good on you Ariel. Glad you had the choice and experienced the pride of making it and following through. why would you want to deny any tiny baby that same choice and that same sense of brave achievement and commitment to your chosen faith?
67. abraham
Paul Mason ,   Hobart Australia   (11.21.08)
Perfect argument!
68. danish circumcision ban
Paul Mason ,   Hobart Australia   (11.21.08)
Maybe just maybe it's got nothing to do with anti-semitism and maybe just maybe it's all about every human being's right to their personal bodily integrity and freedom of choice. Time for some people to grow up?
69. Danes and circumcision
Sharona ,   Jerusalem   (11.21.08)
In Africa circumcision is saving lives by slowing the spread of AIDS. How many Africans would be alive today if infant circumcision had been routinely practiced there? Danes are apparently some of the more ignorant people on earth.
70. Finally!!!
Jan ,   Prague, Czech Rep.   (11.21.08)
I absolutely agree with the advocates of the ban. Whoever advocates mutilation of a child is a highly immoral person.
71. 7 Terry: Body piercing and tatoos are forbidden in the Bible
Rivkah   (11.21.08)
Such things are barbaric and unholy, while circumcism is a sign of the covenant of the Lord with Abraham, just as the rainbow is a sign of the covenant with Noah.
72. Both my husband and my boyfriend are circumcisied and this
Yaakov Sullivan ,   NYC   (11.21.08)
is much better and healthy. Nobody wants to die from AIDS not even me. As a Catholic Jew I am not circumcised because Jesus was a virgin.
73. Danish Jews
Riuz ,   spain   (11.21.08)
so to be circumcised on the 8th day is what makes you Jewish? And this 'law' is the one you keep? You drive on Shabbat, travel abroad, don't care about the scripture- only when there is some controversy somewhere in the wolrd and the 'anti-semitic' yelling starts. So sad! belonging to any religion is in your heart and mind- not in your body. God made the body perfect- don't mutilate it- yes, yes- I can hear all the extremist shouting. Don't bother!
74. to Riuz in Spain
Avocado ,   New York   (11.21.08)
Riuz, this has been part of our religion for thousands of years. I mean all Jews do it, across the board - Reform, Conservative, Orthodox, Ultra-Orthodox. You name it. Even the guy who went to kiss Ahmadinejad. He's also circumcised. Plus, circumcised penis is so much more aesthetically pleasing to look at.
75. To #73 - Do you know what's a precept?
Antonio ,   Spain   (11.21.08)
Every religion has its own precepts to follow: if you're christian (perhaps) you were baptisted when you were 3 or 4 monts. Perhaps, when you were 8 or 9, you did the communion, and when you were 14 the confirmation. Did these rituals you (perhaps) Christian or are your actions and your mind? Jewish people follow this ritual for thousands of year, a ritual that, far to damage the male, prevents ills and powers the sexual act due the higher capability on women's satisfaction. It's not a criminal ritual, as ablation is, so ... why ban it? Hipocresy is very very extended ...
76. #74
Riuz ,   Spain   (11.21.08)
tradition- yes- I can agree with it- if it makes you a Jew. Jews have not been in Denmark for thousands of years- a democratic western country has a right to make and enforce laws. And the law does NOT say it is forbidden- it states the boy has a right as a human being to make up his own mind..... if it means this much it is still valid when the boy becomes a man. As for esthetically leasing: you say.... not everybody agrees. And if this is the reason it is cosmetic, like a new nose!
77. Age of circumcision raised in Denmark
Verna M. Black ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (11.21.08)
Truthfully this is what is known as a "blessing in disguise!" We badly need more Jews in Israel, so pack up Jewish "Denmarkians" and come to your homeland whereby the bris, kashrus, shabbos, et al will be properly observed. Good luck, and call Nefesh B Nefesh.
78. jewish, islamic circumcision done for religious aim solely
ygalg ,   israel   (11.21.08)
no health purpose behind it. islamists obligated by 7 days as oppose to jews by 8 days. muhammad always was competitive with jews. done in matter of 'believe' it's abominable. what if throwing children to a fire it's part of belief? I'm sure you will do it if it was written in Torah or Koran. do it based on belief that god commands it. this is in completely insane. we may aswell start convicts a convict just cause we 'believe' he is guilty. no need for evidences or reasonable thinking. all what it takes is 'belief'. it has nothing to do with left or right views. it is to do with what is logical and reasonable choice and what is not. children get crippled by unverified detail, based solely on speculation (belief).
79. Funny
Mikesailor ,   Miami, Fl   (11.21.08)
The real problem here is with the performers of the circumcision. The practice of "suck and spit' takes on a whole new meaning when the victim is 15 rather than 8 days old.
80. #65 Susan
Yakov   (11.21.08)
The whole point I am trying to make is that people should not have to leave their country in order to observe their religious customs and beliefs. I agree with you that it would be a lot of trouble for a woman who just gave birth to leave the country to do a brit milah. I also continue to believe that, once the situation is such where it becomes necessary to go elsewhere to observe customs, its time to go. It is at that point where freedom of religion becomes compromised.
81. danish circumcisions
leonard elmaleh ,   miami beach,fl   (11.21.08)
if they stop circumcisions ,how are they going to make danish frankfurters?
82. #62 Fine, then. Let's ban baptism too, for sure
(11.21.08)
After all, the baby might catch cold and die, for Chrissake.
83. #72 you're a bit challenged in the logic dept.
(11.21.08)
Jesus was decidedly a Jew; therefore, he was circumcised. It has nothing to do with virginity. If you are a practicing Catholic and uncircumcised, then you are NOT a Jew.
84. 44 Yehudi: You remind me of those who decided midwives
Rivkah   (11.22.08)
should not deliver babies in the Middle Ages and that doctors (mostly males) should take over that profession for the sake of the babies! But how to get rid of the midwives? Accuse them of witchcraft and burn them at the stake to drive them out so the males could take over delivering babies and see female genitals en masse. Now it is "amateur" brit laity who are to be run out, except that the Jews will have to leave with them since having their babies circumcised in another country on the eighth day would still make them criminals in Denmark. But Denmark is SOOOOO Jew friendly. Give me a break. The Danes who were not anti-semitic died off. The hatred of God is what this law to ban circumcism is all about. Danes hate the promise of God to Abraham and that will cost them their place in the heavenly Jerusalem while all the other sons of Jacob (but not Dan and the Danites or Danish) are honored forever by God.
85. Sheer Stupidity and Religious Intollerance
Silvana ,   Glasgow   (11.22.08)
86. No. 24 Bethany
NYC Girl   (11.22.08)
You're quite mistaken. In America, many Christian males are circumcised although, obviously, not for religious reasons. These circumcisions are performed by a doctor, but the babies are still only a few days old.
87. Exageration
Ed   (11.22.08)
Why "leave", if not for a day trip only? Exageration leads to hatred.
88. Not good for health ? Mutilation ?
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (11.22.08)
So why did so many US Non Jewish parents circumcise their sons ? Mutilation ? ask the girlfriends and spouses of their circumcised partner . For them it's not a mutilation , it's great . Now this been said , not every Mohel [ circumciser ] is 100 % qualified , there are bad ones too . And finally , as a Jew , even secular , do it to avoid your son saying later : Daddy why did'nt you make me Jewish ?
89. Denmark's proposed circumcision law
Mr. Stephen ,   Ft. Lauderdale, USA   (11.23.08)
The Danish authorities are right! No one has the right to permanently injure and amputate part of a male's penis without his knowing consent. This is regardless of whether the male is Jewish, Muslim or Gentile A man can always have himself circumcised if he wants it. But for someone to whom it was done before he could even consent, there is nothing he can really do. I only wish that there had been a similar law in effect in the United States when I was born. If I had my choice, I certainly would choose to be intact. There are sexual sensations which we will never experience thanks to this barbaric practice which should have gone out once the world learned about soap and water.
90. 7 Terry: Actually, it is body cutting that pagans do in
Rivkah   (11.23.08)
grieving rites as well as tatoos that are forbidden in the Bible. Body piercing like of the ears is allowed IF the person agrees to be a perpetual slave or servant of a master. Ear piercing is a sign of a covenant to be the servant or slave of another, by choice. Marriage is bondage or a master-servant relationship since the man is the head of the woman. So if a woman gets her ears pierced for marriage, that is an outward sign she wishes to be subject to her husband all her days. Of course, nowadays, body piercing has more negative connotations. But ear piercing is a sign of giving up freedoms and rights, willingly.
