It is almost impossible to understand how the Nobel Committee could have overlooked Israeli researchers with respect to both medicine and physics -- over half of the chemotherapy protocols in use throughout the world today were developed at the Weizmann Institute. Physics? That's a very Jewish thing, especially nuclear physics and quantum mechanics. Oh well -- perhaps the Nobel Prizes in the real fields are more political than I realized.
32. so what...
ahamed al debil ,   cairo   (10.05.11)
muslims have won nobel prizes too...like sadat and yasser arafat, see ...we can contribute to humanity also.
33. congratulations

Sadat earned his Nobel prize and DIED for it...while Arafat the (Cairo-born) terror master from Egypt KILLED for it. Does your debile brain (if any) see the profound differences between a genuine peace maker (Sadat) and a real unrepentant murderer (Arafat, may that scum rot in Hell forever!)?

Canadian lawyer ,   Toronto   (10.05.11)
Muslims have certainly contributed to humanity and Sadat was a courageous leader fully deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize. As for Arafat? Not quite.
37. To: No. 32
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (10.05.11)
Oh, get a grip. Sadat only made peace with Israel because he realized that the road to American foreign aid ran through Jerusalem -- and because he realized that Israel crossed the Suez Canal in 1973 and stood poised to march on Cairo, and the entire Egyptian Third Army were dying of thirst in the Sinai after Israel cut Egypt's supply lines. I remain unconvinced as to Sadat's true intentions.. With respect to Yasser Arafat (may his name be cursed throughout eternity), do please "enlighten" us as to what that piece of terrorist scum contributed to humanity.

Sadat made peace with Israel as he should have and was murdered for it . The only contribution to humanity that Arafat made was when he died. He should have made that contribution at birth.
39. Mazal Tov ! Well done

40. #34 SA, You may be right or wrong since "Jew" is undefined.
Michael ,   California, USA   (10.05.11)
They tried to define it in Israel, in the Knesset, but the government dissolved over this issue more than once, I was told. Also, this is probably the main reason there is no constitution in Israel because there would not be an agreement in answering "who is a Jew" question. So, people count it whichever way they want, and they use such terms as "half Jew" or "quarter Jew." How about in south Africa, how do you count people? Seems like your numbers are a little low.

There is one more Muslim Nobel winner from Turkey: Orhan Pamuk in literature. However he has been bashed by the Turkish people for his words recognizing the Armenian Genocide and the Turkish oppression of the Kurts. He lives half of the time in New York now.
42. Re #32 - I think he's just jocking..

Summing it up,Professor Shechtman has discovered that uniformity is NOT necessary in a stable crystalline material.....and it took a long time to be discovered and a long time to be accepted. Well, isn't it about time that the evil Arab supremacist League discovered and accepted that the Middle East doesn't have to be uniform along the lines of its ideology? Whatever, congratulations to Daniel Shechtman,a product of JEWISH culture. THREE CHEERS FOR ISRAEL!!!

48. a nobel prize worth winning
zionist forever   (10.05.11)
If he had won the Nobel Peace Prize I would have suggested he return it to avoid looking like a clown. They gave the Peace Prize to the king of terror Arafat. Then the really devalued the value of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2008 when they gave it to Obama for not actually doing anything. The nominations for the Nobel Prize closed two weeks after he was sworn in as president. I think they intended to give him the Nobel Prize for not being named George W Bush but they gave him the peace prize by accident. Now they are talking about giving it to the arab spring despite the fact there are not actually an single individuals responsible for it. Kol Hakavod to Daniel Shectman you have been rewarded for actually achieving something worthwhile.

Yeah, the muslim turkey Pamuk is definitely an amaizing witter! i enjoyed so much his novel museum of innocense. Forgive Sarah B. she is controversial sometimes. Besides of what religion or nationality could mean for any of you, congratulations for the academy of science. cheers
50. :-) to whatever #45
Dketerstov ,   Israel   (10.05.11)
Schechtman is product of jewish culture? judaism is a religion. No one have proved the contrary in science yet.
51. #41 I know that
Igor ,   Germany   (10.05.11)
I counted only hard-fact prizes: science and economics. Literature is a matter of taste, and I ignored it also on the Israeli side: I didn't count Agnon.
52. Hip Hip Hooray!

I'm very happy about this news!
53. Let this be a lesson to the world's Israel-bashers
Gobbo   (10.05.11)
It's not boasting, it's just fact: Jews have won Nobel Prizes well out of proportion to their numbers. All the anti-Jewish, anti-Israel propaganda in the world will never change the fact that Jews contribute a lot of good things to humanity. The world is a better place because of Daniel Shechtman, but also because there exists a small country called Israel where Jews like him can live up to their full potential and make their great contributions. My thanks to the Nobel Committee for sending a clear message to all the envious, malicious types around the world who insist on characterizing Israel as a place of pure evil. Imagine how much more the Israelis could contribute if they didn't have to devote so many resources to military and security concerns. Arab and Muslim hatred results in a big loss to the world by making sure Jews spend more mental and physical energy on ensuring their survival than on using their natural gifts to benefit mankind. But at least they still manage to do so, despite all the obstacles placed in their path by their envious enemies.

Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (10.05.11)
Boring? Well, that would certainly explain why Israel -- and the Jews -- are at the leading edge of innovation and technology and Lebanon is -- well -- a fourth world country suffused with terrorists and barbaric practices. Ever contemplate the likelihood that we have it right and you do not?

56. 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics

... was shared by three Americans -- Saul Perlmutter, Adam Riess and Brian Schmidt. The first two named are Jewish.

zionist forever   (10.05.11)
observer For somebody who lives in the Middle East you have a very poor knowledge of history. Tel Aviv was built by the zionists just over 100 years ago on sand dunes. The arabs were living in Jaffa at the time but the zionists decided to built a new town on the sand dunes outside Jaffa ( Tel Aviv ). Jaffa which was mostly inhabited by arabs was merged into Tel Aviv after Israel annexed it during the war of independence ( originally under the 1947 UN partition Jaffa was to be part of the rejected arab state ) now its part of the city built by the zionists. HOPE YOU ENJOYED THE HISTORY LESSON
58. 1 - Another Israeli Nobel Prize ,...
split ,   US   (10.06.11)
Not so fast ,... Still not one scientist born and educated in Israel and an another one in line with others with most of his achievements are affined to his tenure in US institutions ,... Prof. Shechtman was an NRC fellow at the Aerospace Research Lab's at Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio. The National Research Council (NRC) of the USA is the working arm of the United States National Academies, carrying out most of the studies done in their names. Released:10/5/2011 7:00 AM EDT Source:Iowa State University Newswise — AMES, Iowa – The Nobel Foundation today announced Dan Shechtman of Iowa State University, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Ames Laboratory and Israel’s Technion has won the 2011 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

he isn't the first.
60. Israelis-11 "palestinians"-1
Essie HaKohane ,   Floida, USA   (10.06.11)
A disproportionate amount of Israelis won Nobel Prizes which demonstrates Israel's positive contribution to humanity. Only one "palestinian (whose family is actually egyptian) won a Nobel prize. In retrospect, the world realized they gave it to an unrepentant terrorist. This shows that Palestinians contribution to the world is violence, murder and hatred.
