1. The author is right
berlin ,   berlonski   (11.28.11)
I mean, also in the Soviet Union or now in China the dissidents and human rights groups were/are just puppets of the West, no?
2. Kudos to Mr. Daum
No more Shoah   (11.28.11)
This op-ed is short, sweet and precisely to the point! The question that remains is how such anti-Jewish, anti-Israel 5th Columnists/traitors managed to continue their lethal activities for so long? Obvioulsy Meretz, Kadima and their ilk helped shield and hide these traitors under the pretense that expressing dissent is healthy for the nation. Dissent ..YES, Treason...NO! We can hope that these traitors will now decamp out of Israel or be forced to face the State's justice system for their criminal activities.
3. Muzzling NGOs
George Brown ,   New York   (11.28.11)
Maybe better than banning funding is what we have in the US: complete transparency as to who is giving how much money to which NGO. I wonder if Shalom Achsav or Mahasom Watch or other traitorous NGOs members who are basically paid salaries for the antisemtic diatribes, can do that if the provenance of the money is known and publicised.
4. as hanoch daum makes clear once more...
eporue ,   europe   (11.28.11)
israel need smart people... guys like hanoch-no-brain are israels doom....
5. How 'bout trying...
Gunnar ,   Gothenburg, Sweden   (11.28.11)
...common sense instead of paranoia, mr. Daum? You might actually like it.
6. "smearing"
Michael ,   Haifa   (11.28.11)
Israeli governmental policies do a far better job in smearing Israel's image abroad than any EU funded NGO is capable of doing
7. Wimp
ScottB ,   Boston MA   (11.28.11)
If you don't like the message of these NGOs (as I don't), then respond, forcefully. It's cowardice to resort to undemocratic tactics as depriving NGOs of funding in order to stiffle their message. Israel is strong enough to weather crititicism.
8. Treason
nospam   (11.28.11)
Every reasonable country has a treason legislature. Knowingly assisting enemy combatants and terrorists at times of war for own profit, is typically classified as treason. If courts and prosecutors have not been effectively appointed by their own kind, these people would have been prosecuted those people a long time ago. Ergo - the problem is with judiciary branch,
9. What does it all say about Israeli leftists?
Chaim ,   Israel   (11.28.11)
Commonsense 101. Jew and Israel haters massively fund the Israeli left. What does this say about tIsraeli leftists? It obviously says many Israeli leftists are incredibly harmful for Israel. Laws prohibiting hostile foreigners from massively funding leftists is long overdue.
10. George Brown #3
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (11.28.11)
The US doesn't ban them, just requires that they register as foreign agents. Silence is not the goal, the goal is to make sure that the people know that it is propaganda and not a real NGO. Since they are sponsored by governments they cannot be considered as NGOs but PACs and the US has several foreign funded PACs like CAIR.
11. Bravo !
Elie Abitbol ,   Canada   (11.28.11)
Perfectly well spelled out !
12. Last paragraph says it all in a few words.Destruction of Isr
Alan ,   SA   (11.28.11)
13. Vague and murky...
Charles Small   (11.28.11)
Naming the "EU - European Union" is not good enough in this case! Hanoch Daum's piece is good, but he should be more direct with the funders inside Europe. He must name Britain first and foremost (biggest donor of all of delegitimizers, anti-Israel groups), Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Spain and Ireland as those having the most hostile (arrogant, aggressive) attitude to Israel and not naming them leave them out to be named and shamed! These data all turn out from NGO Monitor's meticulous researhes.
14. He's Right - both in this piece and poltically
Ussishkin ,   Tel Aviv Israel   (11.28.11)
Israel doesn't need NGOs to smear it. Its government, people like Yvet Lieberman and Dannon, MKs like Akunis and chums and all the others, rabbis and settlers, NGO monitors lead by academics specialising in 'conflict management', busily promoting more and more chauvinistic prejudicial fascist legislation, justifying the Occupation - what Occupation? What Green Line? - and so-called Op-Ed writers like him and Hagai Segal, are doing a very good job of smearing us, all by themselves. Thanks Daum.
15. If we are to accept Europe is dominated
Norbus ,   Jerusalem   (11.28.11)
By Berlin, then we have to take care of Nazi agendas. Plenty of evidence to prove dual path of Germany. We can not afford to be complacent Why then give outsiders a gate to enter a trojan horse?
16. Freedom of the Press must be equally shared
Lemmings Hotline ,   sd usa   (11.28.11)
If one entity has more freedom than others because of its access to unlimited funds to produce and distribute, then this becomes a diminishment of that freedom .
17. 10.
Ussishkin ,   Tel Aviv Israel   (11.28.11)
You forgot AIPAC
18. Moral conduct must prevail
David ,   Tel Aviv   (11.28.11)
Our soldiers should do their job and be given the proper means to do it. But this shouldn't mean that they are not to be held to a standard of moral conduct. Websites exposing any mishaps or crimes should not be silenced on grounds of being "unpatriotic". If a soldier fondles a women in the name of "security' he could be defended for doing his job--but this is in fact morally wrong and should be exposed.
19. The writer doesn't say outright, but
Coolguy   (11.28.11)
it's absolutely clear that what these "Isareli""NGOs" are guilty of is treason ofhomeland. Nothing less than that.
20. The totalitarian temptation
Helder Vieira ,   Porto, Portugal   (11.28.11)
As expected, the israeli right-wing nationalists are looking more and more like the pakistani right-wing nationalists. Anyway, now I'd expect mr. Hanoch to be coherent and demand the immediate removal of the privileged status of Israel in its relationship with the EU. It would serve the purpose of preserving the israeli dignity by freeing it from the european oppression. It would also serve for the EU to cease being an accomplice in what goes on down there...
21. It
Peter   (11.29.11)
I can understand you guys but i think it's a wrong move. You can't just shut up your critics and keep calling yourselv a democratic state with free speech including. All these NGO's will say; There you see!Israel tries to silence us it's an apartheid state aso. BTW; What is with money which comes from US&EU for settlers. Will it be outlawed, too?I doubt it!
22. #10 ussishkin
solomon ,   bklyn   (11.29.11)
AIPAC is funded solely by American citizens. CAIR is not.
23. #18 david - Agreed
solomon ,   bklyn   (11.29.11)
We should never lose sight of morality.
24. David #18 if it happens report it to the military
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (11.29.11)
They are very through in their investigations. But groups like BtS don't report what they see, they report rumors that they heard without any sort of facts to back it up. That is libel and treason since it is funded by hostile governments that are attempting to overthrow the elected government.
25. Peter #21 so the US & Canada are fascists
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (11.29.11)
Their current laws are far more restrictive than our proposed laws. Why aren't you saying anything about their lack of freedom? We are not shutting up anybody - we are demanding that NGOs be just that NON-GOVERNMENT. Foreign governments should not be allowed to fund groups that are attempting to overthrow the elected government - every other country in the world makes this a crime. I guess using your 'logic' there is only one democracy in the world. Not one Shekel of money goes to any non-leftist group from any country in the world including the United States as for our citizens in Judea and Samaria no money at all.
26. All n.g.o.s receiving foreign funding
jason white ,   afula, israel   (11.29.11)
should register as foreign agents. All their sources of funds should be made known to the public. All reports against our security and security forces should be treated as treason and aiding the enemy. Perhaps there are groups in the donating countries that are against their government, even violently against? We should donate money to them, providing they are not anti Semitic. Let the eurabians feel the threat to their security and survival.
27. # 18 You are naive.
Jules   (11.29.11)
PLO and HAMAS have clearly stated in their political Charters: their goal is the complete destruction of Israel. The IDF must do whatever is needed to defend the country. It's a WAR, not a "hide-and-seek" game.
28. an easy comparison
Yael Schlichting ,   Raubling - Germany   (11.29.11)
What if Arab states would donate money do the NPD in Germany or British Neo-Nazi parties. What would the governments in these two countries say? To be honest, I believe the analogy works so far, I only fear, that the governments in Germany and UK would do plain nothing and try to cover up in silence. Don't get me wrong in Sweden and Norway or so! I only don't want to widen my example to all European countries, because it would be too much to write!
29. Only now do they make a "Quisling"-film in Norway!
tom ,   tel aviv   (11.29.11)
30. to #25: Examples please
TaylorT ,   Earth   (11.29.11)
You state: "Foreign governments should not be allowed to fund groups that are attempting to overthrow the elected government." Please list the European government that is attempting to do this--and the specific NGO that is attempting this. Also list the specific action that is being taken to "overthrow Israel's government." Note that funding groups that denounce certain Israeli practices and/or politicians is NOT attempting to "overthrow the government."
