Witness: Grandfather asked to enroll Rose in haredi boarding school

Yeshiva director tells police Ronny Ron rejected bid for Rose's mother to convert to Judaism so child could enroll in ultra-Orthodox institution. 'I suggested enrolling her in our kindergarten, but he insisted on boarding school,' he says

Ronny Ron, who admitted to murdering his four-year-old granddaughter Rose Pizem, asked to enroll the girl in a haredi boarding school 10 days after she reportedly disappeared, this according to the testimony of the school's director.

Avraham Sa'ada, the director of the "Lev Achim" yeshiva in Netanya, told police Thursday that he had first met with Ron on May 22. He first testified before police three days ago.

"After I was approached by the police, I looked through my files and found the grandfather's details, including his home and cell numbers," Sa'ada told Ynet. "According to my journal, we met on May 22 and June 1." Police believe Rose disappeared on May 12.

"Ron told me that his wife had divorced and that the girl's biological father was living abroad. He told me they were raising the child in Israel. I suggested enrolling her in our kindergarten, but he insisted on boarding school," Sa'ada said.

"He told me that he had previously been rejected by two by two boarding schools in Netanya; I found out that the girl was not Jewish and explained to him that if he wanted to enroll her in an ultra-Orthodox institution she would have to be converted to Judaism, which would only be possible after she turns 13. I also suggested that the mother convert, but he wasn't interested."

Sa'ada claimed that he never heard from Ron after their second meeting. "He appeared to be very young, and I didn't believe he was Rose's grandfather, but I didn’t ask any questions."

Rose's mother Marie Renault arrived Thursday afternoon at a Ramla court for a deliberation on an extension of her remand for alleged involvement in the murder of her four-year-old daughter.

Renault commented on the case for the first time, saying “I am sorry I didn’t take care of her. I want my baby back. I couldn’t have imagined what he did to my baby Rose.”
