Burgas victim walks for first time since bombing

Daniel Fahima is exhibiting rapid recovery; 'he wants to prove he has beaten the terrorists,' father says

The medical state of Daniel Fahima, the man who was most seriously injured in the Burgas terror attack in July, is improving. On Tuesday, Fahima managed to stand up for the first time since he was hurt.

“Daniel remembers the attack and is determined to heal in order to prevail over terror,” his father, Maxim, said. "Two of his friends, Elior Priess and Maor Harush, were killed in the bombing, as were three other Israelis.

“Ever since he arrived, we have been with him here at Sheba (Chaim Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer), not leaving his side,” the father added. “Two days ago he stood up for the first time; were extremely happy.”

Those familiar with the injuries that Fahima, 25, had sustained, his dad said, know that it wasn't an easy feat. "He is actually healing faster than expected," he said. "The process was supposed to take at least two more months before he could stand on his feet. This is extraordinary progress.”

The father credited the medical care Fahima was given and his personality for the progress he has made.

“He is a warrior; he has a very strong heart. He’s not someone who gives up easily and he wants to do everything as quickly as possible. He wants to get up so he can leave and he wants to prove that he has triumphed over terror. This is one of the things he keeps repeating since he woke up. He keeps saying ‘I will beat them. I have beaten them.’”

The Chief of Plastic Surgery at the Sheba Medical Center, Dr. Yossi Haik, said that “Daniel arrived in critical condition. Although he received preliminary care at the hospital in Burgas, when he came to Israel he was unconscious and on respiratory care. He had orthopedic injuries, pieces of shrapnel in his abdomen and burns in 60% of his body. He also suffered injury to his eye, which we are still treating.”

“Fortunately,” Dr. Haik added, “Daniel stood up for the first time two days ago. We are very excited about that. He actually got out of his bed – using the help of those around him – but managed to walk.

“Daniel has been awake for about two weeks now. He’s functioning and in full consciousness. He’s undergoing rehabilitation, which will be both medically and mentally demanding. Seeing as he witnessed the attack and remembers the event, he experienced severe trauma.”

Fahima is expected to leave the unit and start recovery in a few weeks. “At the moment, his injuries are still being monitored, but he is at the end of the plastic recovery process. The next step is to go back to walking without getting dizzy,” Haik added.
