Jewish holidays see sharp rise in Israeli tourism to Turkey

Figures released by the Turkish statistical institute point to an 80 percent increase in the number of Israelis who vacationed in the country in September and October.

Russian tourists may be staying away from Turkey following President Vladimir Putin's travel ban, but figures released by the Turkish statistical institute point to a huge increase in the number of Israelis who have visited the country since the beginning of 2015.

Some 57,000 Israelis vacationed in Turkey during the Jewish High Holy Days in September and October,

an 80 percent increase from the same period last year, which saw a sharp drop in Israeli tourism to Turkey due to the military operation in Gaza in the summer of 2014.

The figures also point to a 41.3 percent increase from September and October of 2013.

Some 200,000 Israelis visited Turkey in the first 10 months of 2015, a 16 percent increase from the same period last year and a 17.5 percent increase from 2013.

Although many of the Israelis traveling Turkey are Israeli Arabs, there was a significant increase in the number of Jews who vacationed in the Antalya hotels and resorts in the past summer and holiday season.

Israelis travelling to Turkey told Yedioth Ahronoth they chose that destination despite the diplomatic tensions between the two countries because it provides the best value for money.
