Man stabbed to death near Tel Aviv

Victim sustains stab wounds to back; police say latest murder an apparent robbery attempt

RAMLA - A man was stabbed to death Sunday on a street in Ramla, near Tel Aviv, as the latest surge of criminal violence across the country continues to exact a heavy toll.

The victim sustained wounds to his back, but rescue workers dispatched to the scene failed to save him.

An initial investigation revealed the murder was apparently a robbery gone awry. The victim was an accountant, and the assailants, who stole his money, apparently had information about his moves and ambushed him as he arrived to make a deposit at the bank.

Police received a report at 12 p.m. regarding a brawl on a Ramla street. Large police forces were promptly dispatched to the scene, where they found a man in his 30s bleeding to death.

Government decides to set up committee

Paramedic Lior Alkalai, who was the first on the scene, told Ynet the victim apparently ran to one of the stores in the area while yelling he has been stabbed, before collapsing.

“We tried to resuscitate him for 20 minutes, but we failed,” Alkalai said. “The damage was too serious.”

The latest stabbing marks the fifth murder in central Israel in the past eight days.

Earlier Sunday, the government decided to set up a committee headed by Minister Gidon Ezra to deal with the recent crime wave. The committee will look into the latest incidents and provide the government with recommendations from the various ministries.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon transferred powers to deal with alcohol-related issues to the Anti-Drug Authority.
