The Kadima party launched its election campaign Wednesday afternoon during a meeting in Tel Aviv, where Prime Minister Ariel Sharon set the tone for a possible third term, favoring the establishment of a Palestinian state under the guidelines of the Road Map plan for peace.

Sharon welcomed his two latest hotshot party recruits, former Shin Bet chief Avi Dichter and the treasurer of the Jewish Agency Shai Hermesh.

With policy towards the Palestinians set, the faction pushed back a decision on its policy in the social, economic and educational fields for next week.

Completion of security fence a priority

Making major concessions to the Palestinians to seal a final peace settlement is a top priority “in order to set the foundations for permanent borders to the state of Israel without jeopardizing national security,” according to the party’s platform.

“Conceding parts of the State of Israel is not an ideological concession but an ideological implementation that will guarantee the existence of the Jewish and democratic state in the Land of Israel,” it said.

Kadima views the establishment of a Palestinian state as the only solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict, including the plight of Palestinian refugees.

Israel would only tolerate a peaceful and terror-free Palestinian sovereignty, and preserves the right to annex Palestinian territory it finds necessary for its security.

It was also decided to take swift action against illegal outposts set up by Jewish settlers in the territories.

The completion of the security fence was also made a priority with the faction vowing to meet the deadline of the end of 2006 while taking into consideration the humanitarian needs of the Palestinians.
