Soldier injured in stabbing attack near Jenin

Palestinian stabs IDF soldier in neck at checkpoint near West Bank city. Soldier lightly to moderately injured, evacuated to hospital; 17-year-old stabber arrested, tells interrogators he was sent by Islamic Jihad

An IDF soldier was lightly to moderately injured Tuesday afternoon in a stabbing attack at a checkpoint near the West Bank city of Jenin, not far from the former Jewish settlement of Sa-Nur.

A 17-year-old terrorist armed with a knife arrived at the area and stabbed the soldier in the neck.

The stabbing took place during a routine operation of an artillery regiment in a roadblock stationed south of Jenin for the inspection of wanted and suspected Palestinians.

During the operation, a resident of one of the villages south of Jenin approached one of the soldiers, pulled out a knife and stabbed him in the neck. The other troops who were in the area captured the terrorist and arrested him. He told his interrogators that he was sent by the Islamic Jihad organization.

The injured soldier received medical treatment at the scene of the attack and was later evacuated to the Hillel Yaffe Medical Center in Hadera.

Rockets in Gaza, Stabbings in West Bank

A large number of stabbing attacked targeting soldiers have been thwarted recently.

A week ago, Security forces managed to foil an attack on Border Guard officers stationed at the Cave of the Patriarchs in the West Bank city of Hebron after arresting a Palestinian teen carrying a 9-inch knife.

When questioned, the teen admitted to wanting to stab a soldier or policeman at the checkpoint.

The compound's commander, Chief Superintendent Gidi Ovadia told Ynet that four stabbing attempts have been foiled in the area since the beginning of 2008.

Several days earlier, a Border Guard officer was moderately injured after being stabbed at the Atarot industrial zone, north of Jerusalem. The terrorist was shot and critically injured.

Three days earlier, a Border Guard officer was killed and a female officer was seriously injured in a shooting attack at the Shoafat refugee camp in northern Jerusalem. The officer, 20-year-old Rami Zuari of Beersheba, was injured in the attack and died of his wounds shortly afterwards.
