'Muppet band' to open for Deep Purple

Fictional Israeli rock group Red Band made entirely of muppet-like dolls

This will be a first: The Israeli muppet-style group Red Band has been chosen as the opening act for the English rock group 'Deep Purple' when they perform in Tel Aviv next month.

Red Band is a fictional rock band made entirely of muppet-like dolls currently starring in their own rockumentary style television show on Israeli cable. The band is made to appear as one of Israel's early rock pioneers of the 1970's, which abruptly disappeared and is reunited on the television show.

During the course of the show, Red Band has collaborated with many leading Israeli singers such as Aviv Geffen, T-Slam and Shalom Hanoch. The artists were incorporated into the show's plot, and performed cover versions of well-known rock songs.

Red Band was chosen out of 15 other performers who competed for the position. One of the main reasons for the final choice made by the show's producers and Deep Purple's managers is due to the slogan voiced by the program, "Rock 'N' Roll is back, and in purple", referring to the fictional band's purple-hued lead singer, aptly named Red.
