Father indicted for killing toddler daughter

State Prosecutor's Office files manslaughter charges against Assaf Goldring for suffocating three-year-old Noa to death using plastic wrap. 'Defendant held plastic wrap to her face and made sure her heart stopped,' says indictment

Assaf Goldring was indicted Thursday for the manslaughter of his three-year-old daughter Noa, some three weeks ago. The prosecution asked the court to remand him for the duration of the trial.

"The defendant took plastic wrap, went over to the toddler, who was asleep in his bed, and held it to her face, completely blocking all of her airways until she stopped breathing," said the indictment, filed with the Petah Tikva District Court.

"He made sure her heart stopped beating before removing the clingfilm, and then took off her soiled clothes and put her in a fresh outfit."

The State Prosecutor's Office went on to describe the act as motivated by the "disintegration of the family unit," adding that Goldring's wife, Liza, left him in 2008. The couple apparently tried to reconcile but to no avail, and by mid 2009, Goldring began suspecting his estranged wife was inciting the toddler against him.

According to the case file, on July 24 Goldring picked Noa up at her mother's, according to a preset agreement. Around 2am – "and with the intention of hurting his wife," the State argued – he decided to end the toddler's life.

Shortly after Noa's death the 30-year-old attempted suicide by slashing his wrists. It was later claimed that he had also digested a large amount of unknown pills, but the prosecution told the court that it was unable to ascertain whether Goldring had indeed taken pills at any time that evening, or prior to slashing his wrists.

Goldring underwent a court-ordered psychiatric evaluation which lasted two weeks and eventually found him fit to stand trial.

A police representative who testified in Goldrign's remand hearing earlier this week described him to the court as 'a sane, cold, narcissist.'

The mother's family was relieved by the court appointed psychiatrist's ruling that Goldring was fit to stand trial, saying they were please the psychiatrist "didn't fall for his act".
